Abstract

HERNANDEZ AVILES, Diana Margarita; GRISALES PENAGOS, Dayana Katerine  and  ADELA TATIANA, Rodríguez Chaparro. Effect of high rate anaerobic reactor configuration on hydrogen production: packed-bed and hybrid-UASB. Rev. ion [online]. 2016, vol.29, n.1, pp.27-36. ISSN 0120-100X.  https://doi.org/10.18273/revion.v29n1-2016002.

The aim of this study is to compare the hydrogen production on a packed-bed reactor and upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (Hybrid UASB). Crumb rubber (recycled tires) and Biopack rings were used as a support matrix. The reactors were operated for 35 days with hydraulic retention time of 12h and an organic volumetric load of 11.26gCOD/L.d, using sucrose as carbon source. The average hydrogen production was 45 and 48% for packed-bed reactor and Hybrid-UASB, respectively. Based on the results and the statically analysis, it was determined that the configuration of the reactor does not influence on the hydrogen production. Moreover, it was observed stability of the process.

Keywords : volatile fatty acids; natural fermentation; renewable energy; sucrose conversion.
