Abstract

AGOSTINI FERNANDES, Leonardo. The University should be linked exclusively to the authority of truth. Franciscanum [online]. 2016, vol.58, n.165, pp.339-380. ISSN 0120-1468.

This reflection paper is based in the speech that Pope Benedict XVI would do, at the opening of the academic year in the University Sapienza of Rome. In this speech, he says that the University must be directly linked only to the authority of the truth. This is the greatest desire of the human being, because he wants to know, not only the theory (homo theoreticus), but he wants the truth as a foundation and support to learn and practice the good (homo ethicus). This is what approaches and justifies the relationship between theory and praxis; between knowledge and behavior. This relationship helps to perceive and understand a famous phrase of Jesus Christ: you will come to know the truth, and the truth shall set you free (John 8, 32). This paper, starting from the speech that would be pronounced by Holy Father, will present and discuss some elements that are part of the nature and mission of the University in the pursuit and promotion of the truth that releases the human being.

Keywords : Bible; knowledge; ethical; university; truth.
