Abstract

VASQUEZ ZORA, Luis Fernando  and  OCHOA BOHORQUEZ, Ana Victoria. On religious education and secular education in Colombia. Regulations and policies (1930-2020). Rev. colomb. soc. [online]. 2022, vol.45, n.1, pp.125-146.  Epub Dec 28, 2023. ISSN 0120-159X.  https://doi.org/10.15446/rcs.v45n1.90221.

This article problematizes the social and historical construction of knowledge, norms and educational policies that have shaped the school experience of teaching, education, and / or learning about religion in Colombia (1930-2020). For sociology, history, and religious education it is about the analysis of conformations as pathetic, as brilliant. Pathetic, since they hardly come close to the complex educational field that represents the pedagogical practice and the culture of the territories. Brilliant, since they rarely account for the difference, multiplicity and singularities of creeds and spiritualities found in the classroom and in regional and local contexts. As a theoretical-methodological tool, the concept of secular education calls into question ERE school religious education, pointing out some horizons by which, more than the construction of a secular state in Colombia, the dispute over religious education has been made between identity and pluri-confessionalism, between the predominance of a ontology of the Colombian Christian religious man and tolerance for others, which means the nuanced expression of the different modalities of exclusion and school and social discrimination. Among the results, three educational series on religion in Colombia are analyzed: religious teaching, religious education, and pluri-confensional ecumenical learning, demonstrating how these school practices, in the name of tradition, conservatism, or ecumenism, displace in Colombia of religious education, the possibility of consolidating a secular education, of the religious fact and phenomenon.
