Abstract

PARRA RICO, Diana del Pilar. THE JOKE AS A FUNNY NARRATIVE IN THE SERMON OF A CHRISTIAN CONGREGATION AND THE LINGUISTIC ATTITUDES TOWARDS IT. Forma funcion, Santaf, de Bogot, D.C. [online]. 2009, vol.22, n.1, pp.45-65. ISSN 0120-338X.

This research attempts to analyze the structure of the jokes presented in the sermons of a christian congregation and to identify its members' linguistic attitudes of approval or rejection in presence of this linguistic phenomenon. This analysis includes two aspects: the structural characterization defined by three functions (normalization, interlocking and disjunction, which allows to distinguish between a 'serious' and a 'funny' story), and the identification of presuppositions and conversational implicatures in order to recognize the role of funny stories in the sermons. This way, this article determines the linguistic attitudes of a christian congregation towards this kind of narratives in the sermons through age and sex variables.

Keywords : linguistic attitudes; funny narrative; conversational implicatures; presumptions; christian sermon.
