Abstract

PEREZ DESCALZO, Matilde. Non-EU Immigrants and Italian/L2 Acquisition. Residence Permit. Forma. func. [online]. 2024, vol.37, n.1, e6628.  Epub Nov 12, 2023. ISSN 0120-338X.  https://doi.org/10.15446/fyf.v37n1.106628.

Immigration in Europe has significantly increased in recent decades due to armed conflicts, dictatorships, and unequal wealth distribution, leading to mass mobility toward regions with greater economic development. The aim of this research is to describe the context (social and linguistic) in which the immigrant community in Italy (Trentino and Calabria), as analysed in this study, finds itself. The goal is to assess the actual feasibility of fulfilling the Accordo di Integrazione (Integration Agreement) imposed by the country to remain in the territory. The study has been conducted under a qualitative and ethnographic approach, based on which results have been obtained that allow us to know the impediments faced by the target group, the poor conditions in which they live and the low level of integration achieved. In summary, overall, the contextual framework hinders compliance with the imposed agreement.

Keywords : acculturation; second language acquisition; social rights; immigration; social integration.
