Abstract

KOSTINA, Irina. English Language Proficiency Level of Pre-service Teachers: The Proficiency Tes. Leng. [online]. 2012, vol.40, n.2, pp.383-413. ISSN 0120-3479.

This is part of an on-going evaluative research study aimed at assessing the quality of the Foreign Language Teaching Degree Program at University X. The goal of this qualitative and descriptive study is to identify the current English language proficiency level of pre-service teachers, based on their proficiency test scores. These scores are considered holistically and analytically, following several language assessment approaches proposed by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Data analysis revealed that only about half of the pre-service teachers achieve B2, a minimum level required for obtaining a bachelor's degree. Based on this, the authors recommend taking action aimed at not only strengthening classroom communicative and evaluative practices, but also implementing curricular changes

Keywords : proficiency test; evaluative research; global and analytical evaluation; level of language proficiency.
