Abstract

RAMIREZ GONZALEZ, Rudecindo. Definiteness in the noun phrase in wayunaiki. Leng. [online]. 2019, vol.47, n.1, pp.28-45. ISSN 0120-3479.  https://doi.org/10.25100/lenguaje.v47i1.7182.

The present article describes the category of definiteness in Wayunaiki (-Septentrional- Arawak: Colombia). The literature suggests that the noun phrase in this language has grammatical elements that lend it as either definite or indefinite. The definiteness category is marked on nouns, articles and adjectives. The indefinite (wanee) is lexical and the definite (-ka-) is a suffix. The first part of the paper presents the state of the art regarding this phenomenon. The second part shows the findings of the current study compared to previous data from other authors. Finally, in the third part, we present our conclusions regarding this phenomenon.

Keywords : definiteness; Wayunaiki; Amerindian languages; linguistic description; morphology.
