Abstract
QUIJADA LOVATON, Karin Yovana. The Values that Characterize the Professional Ethics of Professors at Universidad de Colima. Rev. colomb. educ. [online]. 2019, n.76, pp.265-284. ISSN 0120-3916. https://doi.org/10.17227/rce.num76-7494.
This research article analyzes the perceptions of professors at Universidad de Colima about the values that define their professional ethics in teaching and research, as well as the different dilemmas and/or conflicts that they face at work in order to achieve a balance between institutional demands and their personal needs. A 24-question questionnaire and a semi-structured interview guide with 5 central questions were used to collect the information. Two samples were selected in each methodological phase, the first consisting of 51 teachers considered by their students as “the best teachers” and the second, by 10 teachers randomly chosen from the university’s five locations in the State of Colima. The results allow us to identify the prevalence of five professional values: commitment, dialogue and cooperation, and knowledge and innovation. However, there are also ethical dilemmas related to low salaries, difficulties to regulate their authority in the classroom, interact with their peers and work as a team.
