Abstract

MARCHAO, Amélia; HENRIQUES, Helder  and  CAMPOS, Sérgio. Roaming through the History of Childhood Education in Portugal. Historical Retails about the Nursery João Baptista Rollo. Rev. colomb. educ. [online]. 2021, n.83, e300.  Epub Aug 06, 2022. ISSN 0120-3916.  https://doi.org/10.17227/rce.num83-10781.

This article is part of the research line, Childhood: policies, institutions, and education, developed by the authors, in which privileges revealing the place of policies and institutions aimed at Childhood, in the context of the History of Education in Portugal, recovering the past under the scope of a socio-historical matrix to understand the present and the different options recorded in the education of children and young people. The object of study that leads this article is the João Baptista Rollo nursery, inaugurated in 1905 in Portalegre (Portugal), where the cork industry was developed by the Robinson family who settled there giving the city an industrial brand, capitalist and philanthropic. Between the end of the monarchy and the beginning of the 1st Republic, this nursery school brought to the city a place for the younger children, supporting the mothers who worked at the Robinson factory, at a time where institutions for children under three years old had a strong welfare and hygienist bent on pursuing a healthier person. This kind of nursery, like others in Portugal at that time, is a result of merits and stems from the legislation created, which stated that factories with more than 50 workers should create a nursery for children under three years of age. It is about this reality that we propose to dissert, supported by a socio-historical matrix and documental analysis to a set of sources and documentation that allow us to enrich the notes on the History of Early Childhood Education in Portugal, and particularly in a city located in the interior of Portugal.

Keywords : educational history; childhood education; nursery school; infants; employed women.
