Abstract

BUSTOS LEITON, Gloria Johana; ROMERO CHAPARRO, Aristóbulo  and  CAMPO ARIAS, Adalberto. Association between stress perception and risk of an eating disorder. Salud, Barranquilla [online]. 2011, vol.27, n.1, pp.30-35. ISSN 0120-5552.

Background: Eating disorders (ED) are associated with several factors o or variables. Perceived stress may be a correlated variable that have has not been explored yet in Colombia Colombian female students. Objective: to know the relationship between perceived stress and risk of ED among university women in Bogota, Colombia. Method: a cross-sectional study was carried out. A sample of adult university female students completed the Perceived Stress Scale (\\=0.87) and the SCOFF questionnaire for risk of ED (\\=0.41). Logistical regression was performed to adjust the association (OR) between high perceived stress and risk for ED. Results: a total of 175 women participated. The mean for age was 19.5 years (SD=1.9). Twenty seven (14.9%) participants reported high perceived stress, and 27 (15.4%) women presented a high risk for ED. High perceived stress was related to risk for ED (OR=2.9, 95% 1.1-7.6), after adjusting for age. Conclusions: there is a significant association between high perceived stress and risk for ED among female students of a public university in Bogota, Colombia. More researches are needed including other populations.
