Editorial

Revista Facultad de Ingeniería published its first issue in 1984, as the materialization of the efforts of many professors, especially from the School of Engineering. In tribute to those leaders and visionaries, who believed and made this dream possible, Id like to remember the first members of the Editorial Board. Dr. Germán Urrego was the Dean in turn, Dr. Oscar Piedrahíta, the Journal Editor, Dr. Gildardo Hernández, the Deputy Director, and Dr. Rodrigo Peñaloza, the representative of the research centers.

For the second issue, Dr. Alberto Quintero and Dr. Gonzalo Mejía joined the Editorial Board as representatives of the professors and graduate students, respectively. Initially, the Journal published technical papers and technical notes, mainly from professors and graduate students from the School of Engineering. Currently, the Journal publishes manuscripts from national and international institutions. For instance, on average, 10 % of the manuscripts are from the University of Antioquia, 41 % from other national institutions, and 49 % from international institutions.

Our Journal has been gaining strength for the past 30 years, and has built a name by itself. Important changes have been progressively implemented over these years, giving us a greater impact and visibility in the national and international academic community. According to Publindex, from June 2005 to December 2007 the Journal was ranked in category C, from January 2008 to December 2009 in category A2, and most recently, since 2010, in category A1. At the moment, our Journal is indexed in Scopus, Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE), Institute for Scientific Information Thomson Reuters (ISI), SciELO Colombia, Pascal, Chemical Abstracts Plus (CAplus), Sistema Regional de Información en Línea para Revistas Científicas de América Latina, el Caribe, España y Portugal (LATINDEX), índice de Revistas Latinoamericanas en Ciencias (PERIÓDICA), Red de Revistas Científicas de América Latina, el Caribe, España y Portugal (Red ALyC), Índice Internacional en Ciencia y Tecnología (Actualidad Iberoamericana), Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) y EBSCOhost.

Initially, the Journal was publishing one issue per year, in 1996 began publishing two issues and since 2005 the number increased to four issues. Recently, the Journal has had a change in its management. From September 2012, the Open Journal System platform was adopted in order to receive new articles and to manage and virtually divulgate the Journal, which has significantly reduced the time and effort that is involved in the processing of every issue. Since November 2013, the Journal receives only articles written in English, in order to promote the visibility and impact in the academic community. At present, the Journal has an Editorial Board and a Scientific Committee, whose members are part of our Faculty and also from different national and international academic institutions. Since May 2014, new administrative staff have joined the Journal as well as new section editors. These new members are listed on the back page of this issue.

It is a great source of joy and pride for the School of Engineering and the University, to reach the 30th anniversary of the Revista Facultad de Ingeniería. Such a milestone also affords the opportunity to thank the School of Engineering's administrative staff, editors, editorial board and scientific committee members, support personnel, reviewers, authors and readers, who have made possible the growth and transformation of our Journal throughout these years.

Finally, I invite all the research community to submit their most relevant works to our Journal. It is time to consider new challenges, to continue the growth of our journal, and to reach more readers with high quality articles.
