Abstract

GOMEZ GARCIA, Salvador  and  CABEZA, José. Hearing Spain's Radio. Approach to Radio Audiences during the First Francoist Period (1939-1959). hist.crit. [online]. 2013, n.50, pp.104-131. ISSN 0121-1617.

This investigation analyzes radio audiences during the first Francoist period (1939-1959) and values the efficacy of official propaganda broadcast through the Radio Nacional de España (rne: National Radio of Spain). The investigation uses various statistics and newspaper sources as well as the image of radio given by movies and comics at the time. Through quantitative and qualitative analysis we demonstrate that the drive to have doctrinal programming in news and entertainment in public radio led large audience groups -urban and rural, center and periphery- to find refuge in the evasion offered by private radio stations.

Keywords : Spain; Francoist Spain; radio; radio audiences; influence of radio; 1939-1959.
