Abstract

POSADA MORALES, Juan Esteban. The Promise of Capitalism in Medellin (Colombia, 1939-1962). hist.crit. [online]. 2015, n.57, pp.141-160. ISSN 0121-1617.  https://doi.org/10.7440/histcrit57.2015.08.

This article describes a set of discourses, practices, spaces, and times that were developed as key processes in the insertion of capitalism in Medellin (Colombia) from 1939 to 1962. With this objective, it provides data regarding the production and the role of the subject in developments relating to the knowledge and powers of capitalism that constituted a new configuration of subjectivities throughout half of the 20th century, arising from interests that turned the spaces, times, and praxis of citizens into new types of city and everyday lifestyles. This is done through a genealogy of consumer society in Medellin between 1939 and 1962 that makes it possible to conclude that the BIOS of consumerism was emerging, traced through the rotary press periodicals of that time.

Keywords : Capitalism; cartography; consumption; historic city; Medellin.
