Abstract

SARABIA GOMEZ, Ana Milena; CIFUENTES AVENDANO, Hernán Guillermo  and  ROBERTSON, Kim. Historical analysis of earthquakes occurred in 1785 and 1917 in the center of Colombia. Cuad. Geogr. Rev. Colomb. Geogr. [online]. 2010, n.19, pp.153-162. ISSN 0121-215X.

This article analyzes the historical data of two earthquakes that caused a strong impact in Bogotá, occurred on July 12, 1785 and August 31, 1917. Besides the implications for seismic hazard in Bogota, these events are interesting because preliminary researches have located their epicenters in areas where there is no evidence of recent tectonic activity. The new historical documentary records found in this study contain data related to damage and effects in different towns, and were organized and analyzed to obtain intensity registers. The resulting intensity distribution, superimposed with the seismogenic sources, suggest new epicentral areas for these earthquakes.

Keywords : 1785 earthquake; 1917 earthquake; epicenter; historical seismicity; intensity scale; intensity; macroseismic.
