Abstract

MONSALVO, Edwin; GONZALEZ ARANA, Roberto; MONSALVO, Edwin  and  GONZALEZ ARANA, Roberto. Between whirlwind and the storm climate policy: Presidential elections and political factionalism in Cartagena in 1836. Investig. desarro. [online]. 2013, vol.21, n.2, pp.312-341. ISSN 2011-7574.

This paper aims to describe the electoral process in 1836 in Cartagena which meant the transition of the presidency of Francisco de Paula Santander to Jose Ignacio de Marquez, to show the role played by the provincial power to define them. Our hypothesis is that in the province of Cartagena, the network of local authorities had control of the parish elections and thus helped to define the election results in favor of the moderate faction of the Liberals.

Keywords : Political division; Colombia; elections; local power.
