RODRIGUEZ-NIETO, Camilo; MORALES-GARCIA, Lizzet; MUNOZ-OROZCO, Adrián and NAVARRO, Catalina. Ethnomathematics and Measures. A Study with Merchants from a Mexican Southwest Market. Rev. Fac. Cienc. Tecnol. [online]. 2022, n.51, pp.13-36. Epub Oct 13, 2022. ISSN 0121-3814. https://doi.org/10.17227/ted.num51-11143.
This research article aims to characterize the measures used by merchants of a market located in the central region of the state of Guerrero in southwest Mexico. The work was based on the Ethnomathematics program and on the meanings of non-conventional unit of measure and unit of filled measure. The study is qualitative with an ethnographic approach. For the data collection, semi-structured interviews were conducted with six volunteer traders. The results showed that traders use non-conventional units of measure such as the liter, quart, squirrel, tare and box as a unit of measure of capacity in the sale of products such as chili, pumpkin seed, orange, passion fruit, among others. In addition, relationships are shown between the 1-liter quart, 1-burgundy, 30 kg-15 kg and 15-kg tara-arpilla. It is concluded that the identified measures can be used in the design of contextualized problems and contribute to the teaching and learning of the region's own measurement systems.
