Abstract

MONCADA A, Edwin. NANOTECHNOLOGY, FOOD AND DRUG PACKAGING APPLICATIONS. Vitae [online]. 2007, vol.14, n.2, pp.114-120. ISSN 0121-4004.

This work aims to review the immense influence that nanotechnology has having along the last years in all areas of knowledge. This influence is mainly due to the substantial changes in the materials obtained through this technology, which led to a quick industrial application. One of its main applications and the main capital investment from the governments is the packaging industry of food and pharmaceutical products. This is due, among many other factors, to the possibility of using nano-sensors that when combined with the package communicate to the consumer/producer, as well an in control situations, the characteristics of package material such as: microbiological quality, storage conditions (humidity, temperature, light, etc.), time-temperature treatment and shelf-life, among others.

Keywords : Nanotechnology; intelligent packaging; active packaging; food packaging.
