Abstract

VILLAVERDE, José; MAZA, Adolfo  and  HIERRO, María. The Beveridge curve in Spain: New evidence for the period 2000-2011. Cuad. Econ. [online]. 2015, vol.34, n.64, pp.199-228. ISSN 0121-4772.  https://doi.org/10.15446/cuad.econ.v34n64.45937.

The aim of this paper is to study the relationship between job vacancies and unemployment for the Spanish economy. Firstly, we examine the theory underlying such a relationship, namely the Beveridge curve. Next, different versions of the Beveridge curve are estimated for the period 2000-2011. The results show the validity of the Beveridge curve to model the relationship between unemployment and job vacancies, as well as a clearly defined outward shift of the curve during the recent years of economic crisis. This provides clear evidence of the increasing role played by the structural unemployment in the Spanish labor market.

Keywords : Beveridge curve; vacant; unemployment; Spain.
