Abstract

MORALES RUBIANO, María Eugenia  and  CASTELLANOS DOMINGUEZ, Óscar F.. Strategies arising from a systemic competitiveness approach for strengthening base technology small- and medium-sized companies (PYME). Innovar [online]. 2007, vol.17, n.29, pp.115-136. ISSN 0121-5051.

This article presents some strategies for strengthening base technology sectors such as biotechnology, electronics and software, which are usually approached within local contexts by small- and medium-scale companies (PYME). A conceptual analysis of base technology companies (BTC), using a systemic competitiveness approach and field-work in fifteen companies from the previously- mentioned sectors, was used in an attempt to contribute towards understanding BTC and their better performance in countries having emergent economies, such as those of the Andean region. The results of the investigation revealed the need for coordinating academic, state and private sector efforts aimed at overcoming deficiencies found in management and understanding that competitiveness is everyone’s responsibility.

Keywords : small -and medium- sized companies (PYMEs); base technology company; knowledge (know-how) management; systemic competitiveness; emergent economy; strategy.
