With the onslaught of the capitalist economic system in contemporary Colombian society, it is necessary to direct attention towards it repercussions in the formative process and intervention in the profession of social work. This article aims to address the challenges and difficulties faced by professionals during intervention (principally within the health sector) and proposes theoretical and practical elements to confront the neo-liberal dynamics through a critical overview of the social reality.

The article is developed through the gender perspective which permits the identification and analysis of so called “social problems” of the general population. It makes greater emphasis on the case of the women of the city of Cali, who are faced with discrimination, oppression and violence.

The methodology of this research study was a follows: the Method of the historical-dialectic materialism to develop a critical overview and qualitative analysis defined the object of study. With regards to data collection, a bibliographic review, document analysis and a semi-structured interview were undertaken.
