Abstract

ENRIQUEZ LICON, Dora Elvia. Military Officers and Indian Republics in the Northwest of New Spain, 17th and 18th Centuries. Anu.hist.reg.front. [online]. 2014, vol.19, n.1, pp.11-38. ISSN 0122-2066.

In this paper I expose the essential characteristics of the Indian republics established in Jesuit missions in the colonial northwest of New Spain, remarking the great importance of the military element. The inclusion of military officers was the most significant contribution made by the northern Indians in the constitution of their councils. In this region it was impossible to disarm the Indians, as conquerors required their support to consolidate their advance on the frontier. Thus, the original inhabitants continued practicing their fighting skills and left their mark on the constitution of regional social and political structures.

Keywords : indian military officer; Yaquis; ópatas; Apaches; mission town; general captain.
