Abstract

AMORES CARREDANO, Juan Bosco. The “Political Instruction” of the Marquis de la Torre: a critical view of the Havana society in the 18th century. Anu.hist.reg.front. [online]. 2020, vol.25, n.1, pp.103-133.  Epub Dec 30, 2019. ISSN 0122-2066.  https://doi.org/10.18273/revanu.v25n1-2020004.

This paper aims to present an unpublished manuscript text found in the Municipal Library of Madrid (Spain) which shows the critical-satirical vision from which the Marquis de la Torre, former governor of Cuba, contemplates the Havana society of the last third 18th century. In the previous study, the ideas expressed by the author of the manuscript are analyzed, revealing his prejudices of class, origin and training in the context of the enlightened mentality. Finally, the text constitutes a significant testimony of how the American social reality perceives, in this case of Havana, a typical ruler of the Bourbon absolutism.

Keywords : illustration; society; critical vision; Havana; 18th century.
