Abstract

ARTETA-HERNANDEZ, Cecilia María. Expresiones de la política liberal en la prensa escrita del departamento del Atlántico (1935-1946). Anu.hist.reg.front. [online]. 2023, vol.28, n.1, pp.77-106.  Epub Dec 16, 2022. ISSN 0122-2066.  https://doi.org/10.18273/revanu.v28n1-2023004.

This article presents some of the functions that the written press fulfilled within the expressions of liberal politics in the department of Atlántico during the period of the Liberal Republic. It explains the public opinion created around the issues, and the way farmers were seen in the local press, which allows us to understand these actors’ political linkage. The representation of Nicolas Llinás Vega as an exponent of farmers in public life is explained based on documentary research found in these media and some information from oral sources. The analysis allows us to understand how the relationship between farmers and politics worked. These aspects will be understood by means of “Algodonero”, the guild’s means of dissemination. Thus, it is possible to affirm the existence of a written political culture among Atlantic liberals. It leads us to recognize how these newspapers sought to ratify themselves as political media and of social interest.

Keywords : Political culture; liberal party; public life; political parties; written press.
