Abstract

LEAL-LANDEROS, Joselin. Cosmopolitics among the indians of the Codpa doctrine: complaints against the priest Pedro Joaquín de Cáceres in los altos de Arica (1745-1828). Anu.hist.reg.front. [online]. 2023, vol.28, n.2, pp.53-82.  Epub July 21, 2023. ISSN 0122-2066.  https://doi.org/10.18273/revanu.v28n2-2023003.

This article analyzes the tensions and conflicts between the Indians of Socoroma and Codpa with the priest Pedro Joaquín de Cáceres during the 18th century. Through the accusations against the coadjutor priest, it is observed that these tensions were mediated by disputes over the head of the Codpa Doctrine and that there were disputes between the families of Codpa and Socoroma. We propose that the conflict was not limited only to the file of 1745 and was not motivated solely by the economic conflict that existed between the two priests. Instead, the Indians had their own cosmopolitical strategies for the coexistence of their customs, maintaining power and some autonomy until the colonial decline.
