Abstract

SOLIS CARCANO, Romel Gilberto. Evaluation of concrete columns with the ultrasonic technique. Ing. Desarro. [online]. 2021, vol.39, n.1, pp.7-24.  Epub Oct 22, 2021. ISSN 0122-3461.  https://doi.org/10.14482/inde.39.1.624.189.

Ultrasonic has been used for approximately half a century to evaluate concrete structures, and, it is, to date, the most widely used non-destructive technique in the world. This technique consists of measuring the time in which a high frequency sound pulse crosses the mass of the material; knowing the traveled distance, we can get the velocity. Ultrasonic is mainly used to detect cracks and estimate concrete strength. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of reinforcing steel bars, as well as the variability of the velocity measured in the columns of three buildings. The velocity was measured in twenty-five columns, using longitudinal wave transducers, placed in direct arrangement. The velocity range measured in the three buildings was 3.491 to 3.653 m/s, in a context in which the same materials were used, and the columns had similar levels of stress. According to the tests, only one building complied with design resistance.
