Abstract

DE CARREA-LUGO, Víctor. Contexts to Justify (or not) the Political Violence. Pap.polit. [online]. 2011, vol.16, n.1, pp.41-69. ISSN 0122-4409.

Political violence is a mechanism of conflict resolution used as much as denigrated. Despite the risk to justify such mechanism, there is a series of socio-political scenarios in which political violence may be justified. Based on the review of different contexts as well as international law applicable in each case, I present some contexts in which political violence could be a probable mechanism to resolve a conflict. This paper is articulated in three sections: some initial considerations in order to delimit the debate and to avoid unnecessary diversions, a presentation of cases and, finally, a general discussion.

Keywords : Political Violence; Armed Conflicts; International Law; Peace; Political sociology; Political conflicts; Conflict research; Conflict resolution; Case studies.
