Abstract
MANTILLA VALBUEN, Silvia Cristina. Security and Drug Traffic in the Caribbean: Geopolitics, Regional Integration and Other Issues. Pap.polit. [online]. 2011, vol.16, n.1, pp.269-297. ISSN 0122-4409.
This paper shows the results of a preliminary investigation that constitutes a diagnosis of the threats of drug trafficking in the Caribbean, on the basis of the so-called tendencies of the hemispheric and regional security. The natural condition of the Caribbean as a "transit zone" is characterized, along with historical and social aspects that give the region its proclivity for narco-trafficking. The geopolitics of the security in the region is also considered when evaluating the asymmetric condition of the relations between the United States and the Caribbean related to the security agenda; and when analyzing the common response of the Caribbean countries against the threats of drugs. Other problems like corruption, criminality, and the type of participation in the illegal economy, are also analyzed as part of the illicit practice framework of the drug dealing and its effects associated in the Caribbean region.
