GELVEZ RUBIO, Tatiana and DEFELIPE VILLA, Camilo. Rationality of the Chinese Economic Model: an Institutionalist Perspective. Pap.polit. [online]. 2016, vol.21, n.1, pp.9-34. ISSN 0122-4409. https://doi.org/10.11144/Javeriana.papo21-1.rmdc.
The market economy model with Chinese characteristics has strengthened market liberties for the development of economic activity and higher income levels for its people; nevertheless, some economic practices are still carried out under centralized planning, in contrast to the principles of efficiency and economic reward, something that directly distorts agents' economic decisions. This article seeks to analyze the rationality of the Chinese economic model according to the principle of cognitive rationality from the institutionalist approach, and with this aim aspects like land property rights and corruption will be considered. The article concludes that for the Chinese case practices such as Guanxi and Mianzi prevail as determining citizens' economic and social conducts, in spite of the existence of legal codes that appear somehow contradictory to these practices.
Keywords : Chinese economy and politics; cognitive rationality; confucianism; corruption.
