Abstract

ARUGUETE, Natalia. The ENTel Case: A Look at Media Coverage in the Stage Leading up to Privatization. Palabra Clave [online]. 2009, vol.12, n.1, pp.61-82. ISSN 0122-8285.

The article examines how the media covered the final stage of government management of Nacional de Telecomunicaciones (ENTel) and the company's privatization process. Reports published by five national daily newspapers in Argentina (Ámbito Financiero, Clarín, Crónica, La Nación and Página/12) were examined during August-October 1990, before ownership of the telephone company was transferred from the government to private hands (domestic and foreign capital). This is an empirical study based on the agenda-setting theory, which maintains that the mass-news media have a large influence on audiences by their choice of what stories to consider newsworthy (McCombs and Shaw, 1972).

Keywords : Mass media; National Telecommunications Company (ENTel); Agenda-Setting theory.
