Abstract

CRIADO DE DIEGO, Marcos. On the Concept of Political Representation: Broad Lines for the Study of Representative Democracy Transformations. Rev. Derecho Estado [online]. 2012, n.28, pp.77-114. ISSN 0122-9893.

This Article deals with the gradual loss of meaning of the term "representative democracy" in contemporary European States, through the analysis of the transformations that has taken place in the functions of political representation from Thomas Hobbes to pluralist democracies. The Article arises two broad lines of constitutional analysis of political representation to work with: In one hand, political representation would be able to express general interest and consensus, but unable to mediate and integrate empirical interests. In the other hand, is not further correct a state-sovereignty based interpretation of political representation (representation in the state), but a democratic-sovereignty based approach to it as representation in front of the state.

Keywords : Political Representation; Representative Democracy; Participation; Sovereignty.
