In this paper, we analyze the role of the Public Defenders' Office in the Brazilian legal system and its relevance for the country and Latin America. Our study takes into account the renewing waves of Mauro Cappelletti and Bryant Garth and consider the evolution of the public defense in Brazil since the 1960's until today and its main changes.
