Abstract

The aim of the paper was to analyze the differences in the innovative behavior of small and medium-sized Colombian companies in the period 2007-2008, especially in terms of investment in scientific, technological and innovation activities, human capital involved in the activities, relationships with innovation systems, intellectual property, quality certifications, standards and technical regulations and their impact on innovation. In the methodology, data from the fourth survey of Colombian technological innovation EDIT IV are examined using a multiple correspondence analysis. As for the results, three groups with common characteristics or cluster were identified, the first, the group of innovative SMEs that is distinguished by outstanding innovative performance; the second, the follower / beginner companies shown in between; and the third comprised by the stragglers who have low scores on all fronts and belong to the greatest number of companies in the country.
