Abstract

PALOMBO (CORRESPONSAL), Ana Laura  and  CUADRO, Ariel. Effect of an Intervention Programme on Students with Poor Spelling Performance. Folios [online]. 2023, n.57, pp.69-82.  Epub June 01, 2023. ISSN 0123-4870.  https://doi.org/10.17227/folios.57-14453.

The main objective of this study is to analyze the effect, based on standardized tests, of a spelling intervention plan for schoolchildren with a good reading level and low performance in spelling. The design of the programmed is based on that of Sampaio and Capellini, (2015) and is based on a systematic and time-limited practice, with a priori groups and considering consistent, context-dependent, and inconsistent spelling words based on the frequency of use. The sample consisted of 54 schoolchildren from 3rd to 6th grade of primary school from a favorable educational center in Montevideo. The results of the study indicate that the direct and context-dependent spelling of words showed significant differences between the experimental group and the control group, and no differences were found in the group of inconsistent words. The study shows that spelling is sensitive to systematic and programmed instruction, as well as the limited use of standardized tests to assess improvement in spelling inconsistent words.
