The catchphrases of modernization and sociabilization, shaped by a history of slavery, are intertwined in the creative prose of Guimarães Rosa's last book, Trifle [Tutaméia] (1967). The article focuses on the stories that make up this book, which make evident the relations between anomie and patriarchal customs, on the one hand, and resources, mentality, and aesthetics, which apparently oppose the former, on the other.
