Abstract

GARCIA HERRERA, Alejandra. Crisis and Transformation in Higher Education: The Role of the Humanities in Latin America. Lit. teor. hist. crit. [online]. 2015, vol.17, n.2, pp.79-96. ISSN 0123-5931.  https://doi.org/10.15446/lthc.v17n2.51275.

This article analyzes recent transformations in the Latin American University stemming from proposals put forth by international organizations at the end of the last century. These proposals conceive of education as the basis for economic development. Using the expanding bibliography on the continent's crisis in higher education, the present article sheds light on the ties between university and society fostered by the corporate approach; in turn, corporatization is shown to have jeopardized the social or intellectual role of the university in Latin America.

Keywords : Latin American university; internationalization; economic development; social function; international organizations.
