Abstract

LUZA, Armando  and  SAMANIEGO, Mario. The Struggle for the Word in Las últimas familias by Tomás Guevara: Translating Alterity. Lit. teor. hist. crit. [online]. 2019, vol.21, n.1, pp.167-195. ISSN 0123-5931.  https://doi.org/10.15446/lthc.v21n1.74876.

The article carries out a critical analysis of the translation of the Mapuche subject's discourse in the ethnographic work Las últimas familias y costumbres araucanas by Tomás Guevara, a school teacher who has studied the Mapuche people. In this case, the practice of translation contributes to generating representations that uproot and distort the Mapuche people and their culture, in a context marked by the glorification of scientific rationality and of the ideological tenets that guide the project of the republic. The text analyzed is a significant expression of the interaction among diverse cultural matrixes, which helps understand the complex and shattered historicity of a border territory such as the Araucanía region.

Keywords : translation; ethnography; Mapuche language; 20th century.
