The accelerated and disruptive transformations that are taking place in the twenty-first century's society have led to the positioning of new models of understanding and planning of current cities and territories that integrate the commitment to environmental sustainability, the incorporation of Information and Communication Technologies, global competitiveness, and social cohesion and development. Smart territories are one of the most approached in the Latin American con-text. What are they and where do they come? Where is the real intelligence of a territory? What is the social focus of intelligent territories? These are the questions that guide the construction of this article, whose purpose is to position a sociological view in front of this new model of territorial development.

Keywords : Territories; intelligence; social approach; twenty-first century; smart territory.
