Abstract

HOYOS VALDES, Diana. ETHICS OF CARE: AN ALTERNATIVE TO TRADITIONAL ETHICS?. discus.filos [online]. 2008, vol.9, n.13, pp.71-91. ISSN 0124-6127.

This paper deals with what has been called "Ethics of care" and attempts to give an answer to the question of whether such ethics could ever take over the traditional one, which focuses mainly on the concept of justice. The theoretical foundations of ethics of care are explored and it is analyzed up to what extent some of the criticisms on which this ethics is formulated are reasonable. I conclude that despite of the former, the concept of justice -though it also requires some adjustments- is still fundamental for the development of a good ethical theory.

Keywords : Ethics of care; feminism; traditional ethics; justice; human capacities.
