Abstract

MIGUELTORENA, Alejandro. New modes of popular habitat in Tandil, Argentina. Resigning the use of urban space. Bitácora Urbano Territorial [online]. 2019, vol.29, n.1, pp.147-154. ISSN 0124-7913.  https://doi.org/10.15446/bitacora.v29n1.62987.

The following paper aims to analyze the popular forms of access to habitat that emerged and consolidated in the city of Tandil from the beginning of the XXI century, investigating the potential that they present in order to redefine the use value of urban space, The construction of a more inclusive city. In order to deal with the complexity of the processes occurring in this intermediate city, it was considered pertinent to use David Harvey's theoretical proposal of geographic historical materialism, as well as Henry Lefebvre's ideas on the right to the city. Regarding the methodology, interviews were carried out with references of the organizations that developed projects related to the access to the habitat and were used secondary sources of information pertaining to public organisms. The theme becomes relevant in a context in which speculative processes with respect to urban land generate a growing violation of the right to a decent habitat, forcing the popular sectors to organize themselves and to seek alternatives to those offered by the formal real estate market. These experiences obtained favorable results, contributing elements to think about other possibilities of production of urban habitat.

Keywords : right to the city; habitat production; land speculation; intermediate cities.
