Abstract

PETERSON, PAUL M.  and  GIRALDO-CANAS, DIEGO. The species of Muhlenbergia (Poaceae: Chloridoideae) from Argentina. Caldasia [online]. 2011, vol.33, n.1, pp.21-54. ISSN 0366-5232.

A taxonomic study of the Argentinian native species of the genus Muhlenbergia is presented, based on the study of specimens deposited in 48 herbaria. Different aspects related to the classification, nomenclature, and morphological variations are discussed. Muhlenbergia is represented in Argentina by 18 native species; identification keys, descriptions, synonyms, illustrations, geographical distribution, and some morphological and ecological observations are also provided. Muhlenbergia breviaristata (Hack.) Parodi and Muhlenbergia holwayorum Hitchc. are reduced as synonym of the hybrid Muhlenbergia angustata (J. Presl) Kunth x M. rigida (Kunth) Kunth. Muhlenbergia diversiglumis Trin. is recorded for the first time for Argentina. Muhlenbergia tenella (Kunth) Trin. and Muhlenbergia tenuissima (J. Presl) Kunth are excluded from the Argentinian Flora.

Keywords : Muhlenbergia; Chloridoideae; Poaceae; Neotropical grasses; Flora of Argentina.
