Abstract

Palynological analysis of surface sediments deposited in continental wetlands in lowlands of Córdoba and Cesar departments (Colombian Caribbean) were conducted. The wetlands included taxa of aquatic-grassland group (Poaceae type Paspalum), swamp group with elements of Cyperus sp., Ludwigia helminthorrhiza, Eclipta prostrata, Cyathula achyranthoides and Polygonum densiflorum, sandbars "playón" with Ambrosia peruviana and Alternanthera paronychioides and the group of floodplain and land forests represented by elements such as Margaritaria nobilis, Jacquemontia and Codiaeum sp. Pollen spectra of the superficial sediments from most of wetland included all groups of water series (aquatic, marsh, riparian and floodplain). A direct relationship between richness of aquatic vegetation and palynological representation were not detected. In the wetland of Cesar, the number of taxa registered in sediments ranged between 6 and 20 while in the local vegetation between 11 and 19. In the wetland of Córdoba the number of taxa registered in the sediments varied between 3 and 12 and in the local vegetation ranged from 16 to 39. A direct relationship between depth of the receiving trough (wetlands) and presence of regional pollen in sediments was found. The wetlands of Cesar (that recorded the greatest depth) had the greatest number of palinomorphs belonging to the regional vegetation (extra local).
