Abstract

SEVILLA CASAS, ELÍAS. PUBLIC INTELLECTUALS AND LOCAL INTELLIGENTSIA: A LOOK AT THE ANTHROPOLOGY OF TIERRADENTRO, CAUCA. Rev. colomb. antropol. [online]. 2007, vol.43, pp.119-156. ISSN 0486-6525.

THE PAPER REVIEWS THE WAY IN WHICH ANTHROPOLOGY/ARCHAEOLOGY HAS BEEN CONDUCTED IN TIERRADENTRO, Cauca, during the past sixty years. It focuses on the relation between researchers as public intellectuals and the local intelligentsia. Keeping in mind the "ethical turn" in anthropology, with its double demand for commitment to truth and justice, the implications of Mannheim´s paradox concerning the circle of ideology/utopia are examined. The article analyzes how anthropologists have dealt with the paradox to avoid the hegemony of the anthropological "voice" and its use as an ideological lever in favor of current hegemonies. Although individual researchers proceeded according to the best criteria of their times, there are improvements toward the full recognition of local subjects as full-fledged counterparts at work.

Keywords : Tierradentro; anthropological research; public intellectuals; local intelligentsia; ethical commitment; ideology; utopia; hegemony.
