Abstract

GARCIA, ANA CAMILA. FEMALE DOMESTIC WORKERS AND FAMILY INTIMACY IN BOGOTÁ. Rev. colomb. antropol. [online]. 2013, vol.49, n.2, pp.111-130. ISSN 0486-6525.

Abstract This article analyzes the practices used to subdue and subordinate female domestic workers in Bogotá between 1950 and 1980. First, I present the methodological approach through which I explore the importance this job has had for several middle class families in the city of Bogotá. Then I discuss the control that patrons exerted over the sexualities and behaviors of these women who were striving to keep their good name and reputation. Finally, the article analyzes how these female workers were sexualized according to contradictory and binary family moral standards in which marriage was opposed to eroticism and the role of maid opposed to the one of the virtuous lady.

Keywords : women; domestic employment; sexuality; family practices; prostitution.
