Abstract

PUPLAKSIS, Nelita de Vecchio; PEREIRA DA SILVA, Mônica Magalhães; NOBILE, Renata  and  RAMOS, Dalton Luís de Paula. THE DISCIPLINE OF BIOETHICS AT THE SCHOOL OF DENTISTRY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF SÃO PAULO. rev.latinoam.bioet. [online]. 2010, vol.10, n.2, pp.68-75. ISSN 1657-4702.

Teaching Bioethics promotes the development of principles to guide the growth of technology, scientific research, moral conflict resolution and works to transform society so that it will become more just. Beginning in 2004, the Faculty of Dentistry, University of São Paulo (FOUSP), included the discipline of bioethics in the curriculum. In order to verify the contribution of this discipline to the humanistic education of the students, two investigations were conducted: Study 1, in 2004, worked with students who did not have classes on Bioethics and Study 2, in 2007, worked with students who enrolled in the discipline. A semi-structured questionnaire was applied to 20 students at graduation who had not FOUSP bioethics classes and 20 students who attended the discipline of bioethics at the same institution. This questionnaire included the evolution of the professional / patient relationship, the humanization of our service and professional ethics. Another semi-structured questionnaire was administered to 20 patients in 2004 and another 20 patients in 2007, inquiring about the quality of the treatment and the professional / patient relationship of the dental services offered by the students. The interviews were valued qualitatively according to the method of content analysis of Bardin. The results show that the inclusion of bioethics as a compulsory subject represents an important step in the paradigm shift on the value of human dignity. However, it is still prevalent at this institution, in the global context of the learning, the strong tendency to focus on technical education, which ends, in practice, to breed in the students, throughout the course, a reduced view of the patient as a person, reducing all its dimensions only to the biological aspect. It is not enough to Bioethics becoming just another discipline, isolated from the transmission of values and attitudes of other staff members. It is necessary that all teachers live and teach the application of ethical values in the professional / patient relationship, since the global educational context is essential for the comprehensive humanistic education of the student.
