Abstract

COHEN DAZA, David. From Bolívar to Pibe or the twilight of the idols: the study case of the sculptures of Bolivar in the "Plaza de Bolívar" of Bogotá and the sculpture of Pibe Valderrama of Santa Marta. Apuntes [online]. 2010, vol.23, n.2, pp.210-221. ISSN 1657-9763.

The article describes, using as a background the study cases of the sculptures of Bolívar in Bogotá and the Pibe in Santa Marta, the current problem of the sculptures in public spaces, when the definitions of monument and heritage are no longer comparable. As part of the problem, the article explores the relationship between production forms of the authoritarian memory expressed through the monuments, in the most common meaning of the term, and the contradiction expressed when the monuments are used as an expression of the popular culture. Some ideas about the role of the monuments in the construction of the public space are shown, as a scenario for the depiction of the political power. According to these considerations, a brief reflection is presented about the future of these objects within the context of Colombia as well as the challenges for its conservation.

Keywords : Historic Monuments; preservation; urban environment; cultural heritage; statement of significance.
