Abstract

TORRES CARRILLO, Alfonso. Organizaciones populares, construcción de identidad y acción política. Rev.latinoam.cienc.soc.niñez juv [online]. 2006, vol.4, n.2, pp.167-199. ISSN 1692-715X.

This paper analyzes the experience of a group of popular urban organizations in Bogotá towards the end of the Twentieth Century. It is argued that these organizations contribute to the awareness of these groups as social subjects. This awareness is developed through the progressively growing strength of social and organizational bonds, as well as through the affirmation of cultural identities and the creation of new democratic and political subjectivities. A participatory approach was used, combining seven case studies and analysis of documents. The paper discusses the historical context in which these organizations were developed, the social dynamics that they initiated and have influenced the social fabric and the organization of these neighborhoods. It also discusses the cultural strategies that these organizations develop, as well as the new political conceptions and practices that contribute to the definition of new social identities and of a critical citizenship.

Keywords : popular organizations; identity; citizenship.
