Abstract

PEREZ-RODRIGUEZ, Irma Leticia. The national identity and meaning-making of young people about their country. Rev.latinoam.cienc.soc.niñez juv [online]. 2012, vol.10, n.2, pp.871-882. ISSN 1692-715X.

Abstract: This study describes the influence of the school in the construction of the national identity of young people in Mexico. A sense of national identity generates feelings of belonging and group affiliation that orientate the actions of the people and their judgements about the past, the present and the future of their country. This research affirms that young people have formed a sense of belonging to their country but contends that they do not have strong awareness of economic, political and social aspects of Mexico, nor a sense of participation in the institutions of the state. The school is required to modify the means used in the construction of identity to form citizens who have a sense of belonging as well as national engagement in a globalised world.

Keywords : identity; national identity; cultural identity.
