Abstract

BIANCHI, Eugenia. Problematising the notion of 'disorder' with regards to ADHD and the influence of the DSM manual. Rev.latinoam.cienc.soc.niñez juv [online]. 2012, vol.10, n.2, pp.1021-1038. ISSN 1692-715X.

Abstract: In Argentina, health and education professionals with distinctive theoretical and therapeutic positions, sharply debate issues regarding the diagnosis and treatment of ADHD during childhood. As part of the PhD in Social Sciences' (UBA) investigation, this research focuses on the conception and dissemination of ADHD as a childhood behavioral disorder, from the DSM and different sources, giving special consideration to some characteristics of diagnosis and treatment. The methodology is qualitative, based on the analysis of written documents, including interviews with health and education professionals, specialized journals and books, web pages and journalistic articles. A Foucauldian perspective is used, centered on the concept of problematization.

Keywords : ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder); childhood, problematization; DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders).
