Abstract This article propounds an interpretation of the historical evolution of the peasantry in the Dominican Republic. It argues that peasant classes played key roles in the economic and social development of this Caribbean country. It offers, moreover, a comparative perspective of the Dominican peasantry, which is contrasted with peasantries in other Caribbean and Latin American countries.
