Abstract

KACZAN, GISELA PAOLA. Women's travel. Representations to vacation on the sea coast, Mar del Plata, Argentina, since 1920-1940. memorias [online]. 2020, n.42, pp.111-142.  Epub Oct 28, 2021. ISSN 1794-8886.  https://doi.org/10.14482/memor.42.982.

From a historical perspective, records of travel experiences offer a wide repertoire of forms and functions. Specifically, the leisure and tourism trip had particular meanings for women, that is why in this work it is proposed to investigate their meanings, give an idea of some of the groups that mobilized, the imaginary was put into play and the practices were activated. The destination is Mar del Plata, a seaside resort in the southeast of the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina towards the 1920s-1940s, the time of a national situation that influenced the promotion of tourism and the generation of more plural summer groups. From there it is inferred that although traveling and spending a vacation time implies experiences shared by those who are tourists, those experiences are neither general nor static, on the contrary, they involve disparate senses and mobile processes, according to the group belonging to the which is.

Three illustrated magazines were selected to detect representative cases: Caras y Caretas, El Hogar, Life, the first two national and the second foreign. This material has made it possible to read texts and images, not for descriptive purposes but as an interpretive practice of symbolism in the social dimension.
